About Caliber 3135

The Caliber 3135 is arguably Rolex's most significant movement, serving as the workhorse of their professional and dress watch collections from 1988 until its successor, the 3235, began replacing it in 2020. For over three decades, this movement powered some of the most iconic references in watchmaking history.

Technical Excellence

The 3135 introduced several innovations that became hallmarks of Rolex engineering:

Parachrom Hairspring (from 2005)

In 2005, Rolex upgraded the 3135 with their proprietary Parachrom hairspring, manufactured from a paramagnetic alloy of niobium and zirconium. This innovation provides up to 10 times greater resistance to shocks compared to traditional hairsprings and remains virtually unaffected by magnetic fields.

Microstella Regulation

The movement features Rolex's signature Microstella regulating screws on the balance wheel, allowing watchmakers to fine-tune accuracy without disassembling the hairspring. This system provides precise adjustments in small increments.

Kif Shock Absorber

The 3135 employs a Kif shock protection system to safeguard the delicate balance staff jewels from impacts, contributing to the movement's legendary durability.

Caliber Family

The 3135 spawned a family of related movements, each building upon the base caliber with additional complications:

  • 3155/3156 - Day-Date models with day display complication
  • 3175 - Explorer II with 24-hour hand for second timezone indication
  • 3185/3186 - GMT-Master II with independently adjustable hour hand

Service Information

The 3135 is known for its reliability and serviceability. Rolex recommends service intervals of approximately 10 years for modern movements equipped with Parachrom hairsprings. Common service parts include:

  • Mainsprings (typically replaced at each service)
  • Click springs and click wheels
  • Date driving wheels
  • Escape wheels and pallet forks

Legacy

While the 3235 has begun replacing the 3135 in new production, the older caliber remains highly relevant. Millions of watches powered by the 3135 continue to serve their owners reliably, and the movement's proven track record makes it a favourite among collectors and watchmakers alike.
